Consulate General of Iceland in Nuuk was officially inaugurated on November 8th , 2013 , when the Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson and the former Premier of Greenland Aleqa Hammond revealed the Icelandic coat of arms on the building at Hans Egedesvej 9, Nuuk.

Iceland was the first foreign state to establish a permanent consular representation in Greenland.

The purpose of the consulate is to strengthen relations, friendship and cooperation between the neighbouring countries Iceland and Greenland. The Consulate's task is to provide consular services for Icelanders in Greenland, increase trade between the countries and promote Iceland and Icelandic culture.

The Consulate General is also intended to cooperate with Greenlandic authorities in issues relating to the Arctic and West-Nordic cooperation.

Consul General

Tómas Orri Ragnarsson is Iceland's Consul General in Nuuk, Greenland as of 1. August 2026. Previously he held the position of director for the division countering hybrid threats within the Defence Directorate at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland. Previously he has been posted at the Embassy of Iceland in Oslo and the Permanent Delegation of Iceland to NATO in Brussels, as well as working for the Nordic Council of Ministers Secretariat in Copenhagen. In his work he has focused primarily on the Arctic, Nordic, NB8 and regional cooperation, as well as on security and defence related issues since joining the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 2001.
